Well -- I finally cracked! I gave in!! Comments are no longer functioning on this blog!

To be frank there was little point leaving the comments option still 'switched on' for this blog. Its not a regular blog posting site as you'll notice and sadly the only posters of late were annoying spammers trying to promote 'rip-off' designer watch copies -- so good riddance to them!

But apologies to anyone with genuine intent who would like to have commented. For those folks -- feel free to send a comment via the contact us page and we will post it ourselves, as a news item on the blog directly, if it is appropriate and relevant!

you may have been wondering how to make a website. well i'm going to spill-the-beans in this post and let-the-cat-out-of-the-bag. if you think you've already found out how to create a website then hold-your-horses and don't-count-your-chickens until you've read this article through. It's all too easy to jump-the-gun and leap-without-looking into unknown territory - if you have just joined the 'online community' - and before-you-know-it you'll be up-to-your-neck in muck-and-bullets - not to mention potentially punitive charges from some 'website building and hosting' options!

But first an aside - I only just discovered that a huge wealth of 'aphorisms', sayings, epithets (call them what you will) that we know and cherish as all-english-through-and-through actually derived from the seminal work of (probably) the greatest spanish writer who ever lived - the spanish equivalent of shakespeare - miguel de cervantes saavedra, better known just as cervantes to most people, whose anniversary it is this week! that 'seminal work' of course is 'don quijote' (or 'don quixote') the tale of the myopic spanish nobleman famed for tilting at windmills (a saying in itself nowadays) who was accompanied in his travels by his faithful 'squire' the rotund, font of homely knowledge, sancho panza!

those aphorisms and 'old wives' sayings, that exude from the chapters of 'don quijote', typically form the tongue on sr.panza include such famous observations as:

a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
(shouldn't) put all your eggs in one basket
the sky's the limit
a wild goose chase
the pot calling the kettle black
turn over a new leaf
born with a silver spoon in his mouth...

amongst many others...

in fact 'don quixote' as it was titled when published in english, which has also been published in many other world languages, is considered the most widely read book in the world second only to the Bible!!

but i digress, such is my won't to have a 'finger-in-every-pie' (as sancho also once said)...

the point of the piece was to write more about how to make a website, or indeed how to start a website, which can seem the most daunting task to those who are 'uninitiated' into the mysteries of html (that's 'hyper text mark-up language', of course, the arcane coded references that instruct your browser as to how to interpret and render a web page that appears on the internet on the screen of your PC or laptop.

not but a a few years ago answering the question of 'how to make a website' would have led to a long exposition about how to structure the lengthy and weird looking coded information that represents each of your pages. of course a set of 'pages' on the internet that may be, however loosely, bound together (normally by dint of sharing the same 'base' domain name - that's the first part of the address that appears in the url bar of your browser - such as www.evolvingintelligence.co.uk - and ending in .com. co.uk, .org or any one of multifarious 'top level domain' (tld) suffixes including an ever increasing array of geographically dedicated options - like .us, .eu, ,asia and the many other country specific variants) all form what is then known as a 'web site' or website.

these days there are multiplicity of options for creating websites that actually makes the first steps for anyone who is new to all-that-stuff even more complicated and confusing. there are many hundreds of services and options purporting to be the ansswer to the question 'how to create a website' and they co-exist alongside a plethora of web designers and website developers who also ply-their-trade by offering to do all the graft for you to save you having to master anything and yet have your own website up and running - for the payment of what can sometimes be the equivalent of a spanish nobleman's birthright!

many people edge their way into creating one 'type' of website - a web log, commonly called a blog - which can very easily be set-up and published to without much 'technical expertise'. The biggest, best known (though not necessarily best options!) include google's blogging platform - blogger, and the wildly popular wordpress. wordpress is popular for good reason because there are multitudes of deigns (templates) ready made by thousands of designers, to choose from. the 'dashboard' is 'fairly' easy to user, and the editing and publishing is also 'quite' simple to get to grips with.

wordpress is essentially a very basic beast - but there are also lots of add-ons and options to extend its features - many produced by third parties and many which work with varying degrees of success (some don't work at all)...there is no disputing that wordpress is amongst the most popular blogging vehicles but that is what it is - a blogging vehicle. it is not really a 'complete4' web publishing solution that offers the facility to build a more traditional website nor can you easily build in a shop or other elements.

for any small business, or home based business that wants an impressive website and blog...and maybe an e-commerce section for actually selling things then it will certainly be necessary to look elsewhere than wordpress.

a brief check of the market shows that there are many 'small business website' options where you can use a site-building tool to generate a simple 5 or ten-page site that can cost you anything from a modest to a substantial monthly sum. what is little spoken of is that such a small and limited site will probably never do much in terms of impressing itself upon the search engines - so other than traffic you direct to your site, via business card or advert, your site will remain largely barren of visitors...little point in that from a business point-of-view.

in an ideal world - if you ask - how to make a website you need a simple platform, that is easy to get to 'learn your way around' - has little in the way of major technical challenge to achieve a reasonbly result quickly. there may be more sophisticated levels of 'tinkering' you can learn over time, or employ someone to do as one-off jobs (or for a small monthly maintenance contract fee). but essentially you want a simple editing tool that allows you to see what you are building as you go without the absolute need to have to get drawn into the complexities of html. this would ideally be a wysiwyg editor - which, if you don't know is 'what you see is what you get' - meaning that you can see what you are developing as you go.

it would be all the better if you could not only easily learn how to build a website yourself but you could also add on a blog at-the-drop-of-a-hat. a blog is like a diary that you can add daily or twice weekly (or if you're like me ...monthly!!) thoughts, comments and articles to...they can be a few lines long, a link to another resource, a lengthy diatribe, might contain pictures or diagrams..or increasingly these days, video (surprisingly easy to do)...whatever you want.

let's say you also want to build some trade - maybe in products you make or sell, or services you provide, or products you buy-in, or have drop-shipped...whatever. perhaps you want to expand upon a bit of ebaying but don't want to be tied into the monthly fees incurred by an ebay shop...

then the only tool than can help you do all this, and not only help you answer the question of how to make a website, but also how to publish a blog, and how to start a simple ecommerce operation is...terapad.

busy, busy, busy...wow! it can be difficult sometimes to keep up with blogs like this can't it? so far i have refused to 'pay' a 'ghost' to blog for me - but as i now run multiple blogs in different fields the pressure is building to let some of them be 'managed' by others! this one, however, we won't be compromising because it is the 'company' blog and our sort-of-shop window, as it where, for mentioning some of the variety of things we do - besides simply promote the excellent website and blog building platform - terapad (links to our other site that has full details)

naturally it makes sense for us to blow the terapad horn here - as we do think it is a sweet, slick, fast, quality solution to getting a well featured small business website up and running - particularly for those businesses that may either have 'put off' the inevitable until now, or perhaps those who first got their website early on and now it needs some radical updating! Using the grey matter is what supposedly sets up apart from the 'simpler' primates and other less 'evolved' life-forms...yet its seems that certain age old problems still beset Homo sapiens when it comes to proving that they really are 'wise men'!
